Genealogy research is exciting, and in the process we accumulate numerous documents, files, photographs and notes. But I sometimes wonder what the point of having all this information is unless we have some way of telling the story, the ‘what happened’, that will interest and inspire the future generations. How do you go from researching your family history to writing a family history?
Most of us will have researched beyond the basic birth, marriage and death details, beyond the census, and tried to find the ‘deeper’ history of our ancestors’ lives. How can you construct a life story from such basic details? If you are writing up your family history, perhaps for your children, or as a gift for members of your family, how can you make an ancestor’s life sound interesting when all you know is his birth, marriage and death details? One day, an old man who passed by our village and told a prescription to my father: put an egg into toad’s mouth, and buried in the straw, and then burned it until the egg could eat. My father asked:” is the egg could eat?” “Of course, this prescription has cured many people.” The old man answered.
At first, he was very happy when he heard about this news. But he thought it over, he pull a long face again. Was it all right to eat a virulent animal? Finally, he wanted to try. But my mother held the opposite views: “maybe it is useful to our daughter’s disease. But it is winter now, how can you find the toad? When the next spring comes, they will appear.” Ma father was angry: “it was too late to spring, I can get them under the soil.” In the morning, he out of the door and dig a lot of caves hardly. But none of the toads he could see. Luckily, he found four toads under the pointing of neighbor’s grandma.

On Tuesday, George R.R. Martin handed in the script, more precisely the first draft, of the ninth episode he is writing for the second season:

This is television… (no, it’s not TV, it’s HBO)… so there will undoubtedly be many further drafts and revisions. But the first draft is the hard one. Read the rest of this entry »
